BirdSize.com provides general educational and reference information about bird size, morphology, taxonomy, and related subjects.
Measurements Vary
Bird measurements are not universal constants. Individuals of the same species can differ in body length, mass, wingspan, proportions, and other physical characteristics.
Published values may also vary because researchers use different samples, geographic populations, measurement techniques, definitions, or rounding methods.
Visual Comparisons
Visual scale tools are intended to make relative size easier to understand. They are not a substitute for measuring an individual animal directly.
Where a range is known, a visual representation may need to use a representative value to place the bird on a shared scale. This does not mean every individual of the species has exactly that dimension.
Not Identification Advice
Size can be useful when considering bird identification, but it should not normally be used in isolation. Perspective, distance, posture, age, sex, lighting, and viewing conditions can make a bird appear larger or smaller than it is.
Scientific Information Changes
Taxonomy, datasets, and published measurements may change as new research becomes available. BirdSize may update pages accordingly.
