BirdSize.com publishes reference material about bird dimensions, morphology, and relative scale. Our editorial approach is built around clarity, traceable measurements, and careful separation of different kinds of biological data.
Measurement Accuracy
Measurements are reviewed in the context in which they were reported. Bird size is not always represented accurately by a single fixed number.
Body length, mass, wingspan, wing length, bill length, tail length, and other measurements may differ between males and females, adults and juveniles, populations, subspecies, geographic areas, and measurement methods.
Where a range better represents the available evidence, a range may be shown.
Different Measurements Stay Different
BirdSize does not treat similar-sounding measurements as interchangeable.
Wing length is not wingspan. Body length is not standing height. Bill measurements taken from different anatomical points are not automatically combined. When the underlying source distinguishes between measurements, BirdSize aims to preserve that distinction.
Missing Information
A blank field is preferable to an invented value.
If a reliable measurement is not available for a species, BirdSize may leave that measurement unpublished until suitable information can be documented. Values are not created by scaling another measurement simply to complete a profile.
Species Pages
Species profiles are intended to explain the scale and morphology of a bird in a useful way. Written material may interpret measurements, compare proportions, or explain what a dimension means in practice rather than simply repeating data already displayed elsewhere on the page.
Updates
Bird taxonomy and biological datasets change. Scientific names may be revised, measurements may be updated, and better source material may become available.
BirdSize may revise existing pages when new information materially improves a record. Significant factual errors are corrected when identified and verified.
Editorial Independence
Advertising, commercial relationships, or traffic considerations do not determine biological measurements or factual conclusions presented in species records.
